Sitting for long periods of time has found to be detrimental to our health and yet the way our environment has been designed encourages us to sit for long periods.

Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have begun to look at how sitting can be reduced in the workplace by introducing standing desks

Making environmental changes alone may not be enough to maintain reductions in sitting time at work. This project is also examining what other factors influence the reasons why we sit and stand in the workplace. Understanding what influences sitting will help us introduce changes to workplaces to encourage employees to stand and move more.

It is important to find ways to reduce workplace sitting that are pragmatic and can be maintained for long periods of time. By understanding how we can reduce sitting in the workplace we can hopefully reduce the negative health consequences of sitting later in life.
