Both aerobic and resistance exercise have been shown to have positive effects on glucose control. As such rowing, which combines both forms of exercise, may be ideal for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Rowing Away from Diabetes is a pilot study to determine whether rowing can indeed positively influence glucose control in a controlled laboratory setting. This is as a precursor to a larger community-based study if the initial results are positive.

The study is supported by Concept2, Medtronic and the Wellcome Trust.

  • Eight people started this study and completed the 12-week exercise programme.
  • We are currently investigating the effect of indoor rowing on blood sugar and heart function.
